Here Jo divulges her top tips for how to stay healthy this summer! Incorporate these ideas into your daily routine to boost your health, happiness, energy, and balance throughout the sunny season.

Summer is (almost) here! Longer days, brighter evenings, alfresco dining, deliciously sweet berries. What’s not to love? Here are my top tips for staying healthy this summer so you can enjoy every bit of it….

  • Do more of whatever makes you smile inside and out

In Chinese medicine, the organ associated with summer is the Heart, and the emotion associated with the Heart is joy. Summer is the perfect time to cultivate joy. Think festivals – dancing outside, spending time with friends, cooking over an open fire. Generally letting go and enjoying life. The more joy you take in at this time of year, the more you’ll have in store to see you through the introspective seasons ahead.

  • Stay hydrated but lose the ice

It’s important to drink lots of water during the hot summer months but too much cold can injure the stomach. Ice makes it hard for the stomach to do its job properly and can lead to lots of digestive problems. Reach for room-temperature drinks instead and your gut will thank you for it! Try adding mint, cucumber or watermelon slices to water – these are all considered cooling in Chinese Medicine.

  • Get active

In the summer months, when Yang is at its peak, take advantage of the extra energy within our bodies and get active. Exercise keeps blood and oxygen circulating so that proper nutrients can make their way to the rest of your body. The extra yang also means our bodies are warmer and so are primed for some good stretching.

  • Make new connections

During the summer months, you may find yourself more inclined to smile at someone in the supermarket or spend a few extra minutes chatting to the postman. The heart is nourished through connection, so if you have the urge to strike up a conversation with someone you don’t know, go for it. Nurturing connections during summer not only makes the season more fun but it also helps ease the transition into autumn and winter, when we tend to pull inward and spend more time alone.

  • Eat summertime foods

Enjoy all the delicious foods produced at this time of year such as strawberries, that are particularly rich in vitamin c, raspberries, apples, runner beans, fennel, cucumber, melon, rhubarb and rocket. Eating in season also ensures you are getting the best flavours and nutrition from your food and is environmentally friendly. Try to source organic or check with the farmer whether they use natural pesticides and fertilisers.

Wishing you a healthy and happy summer!
